Tackling loneliness
Last week Prime Minister Theresa May appointed minister Tracey Crouch to tackle loneliness issues in the UK which had been raised by the late Jo Cox MP.
At Grace Eyre we welcome this.  93% of people with learning disabilities interviewed by the Foundation for People with Learning Disabilities in 2012 said they felt ‘lonely and isolated’.  People with learning disabilities who use Grace Eyre services recently developed a new Charter which now informs every aspect of our work: ‘We want to lead healthy lives; to have strong and supported relationships; to travel around where we live; to have good housing; to try new things; to be listened to; and to be part of our communities.’ Our mission is to work towards Grace Eyre being led by people with learning disabilities and through that deliver high quality housing, support and activities in their local communities.
The Grace Eyre Friendship project is a social group for adults with learning disabilities. The project was set up for people with learning disabilities in Brighton & Hove to be better able to live their life in the way they want to. We support people to organise and take part in activities and to get ‘out and about’ more across Sussex. This reduces social isolation and loneliness and increases independence and resilience. This is a great example of a local initiative to tackle some of these bigger issues in society.
