About the opportunity

The Purple Playhouse Theatre is a fantastic not-for-profit theatre and Community Interest Company (CIC) associated with the Grace Eyre Foundation. As a CIC, the Purple Playhouse Theatre team hires out all of Grace Eyre’s spaces and organises events and runs the café/bar in the Purple Playhouse Theatre. All profits from performances in the Purple Playhouse Theatre, the café/bar and room hires are reinvested in Grace Eyre’s many projects and programmes supporting people with learning disabilities.

Theatre Festival Volunteers are part of a small, dynamic team including the Theatre and Events Manager and bar workers. They are ambassadors for the theatre and are general all-rounders who support events at Grace Eyre’s Purple Playhouse Theatre by helping with set up (e.g. putting out chairs and tables and directional signage), taking and selling tickets, providing information, assisting members of the public around the building as stewards, keeping the bar/café area clean and tidy, and helping to take down after events.

Skills and experience needed

  • Previous events experience is not necessary but very welcome.
  • Enthusiasm, friendliness and a willingness to get involved in a range of varied tasks.
  • Being interested and approachable. Good people skills.
  • Reliability and punctuality.
  • Happy to volunteer in a small team.
  • Presentable appearance for a customer-facing role.

How you will be supported

You will be given an induction and training on all aspects of this role by the Theatre & Events Manager. A dedicated volunteer manager will also be available to give you support, advice and guidance. Other members of the Theatre & Events team will also be able available for help and support.

Practical considerations

Events take place during evenings and at weekends at various times throughout the year, but particularly in late March and throughout the month of May during Brighton Fringe. Volunteers would usually be expected to arrive around an hour before the doors open to help set-up and stay until the end to help with take down. Volunteering can involve late finishes (as late as 11:00 pm). A volunteer could commit to doing every event or just a few events a year. We can work with any kind of commitment. Reasonable travel expenses will be paid.

The Purple Playhouse Theatre is based on Montefiore Road, opposite BHASVIC Sixth Form College, in a converted church. The theatre is also easily accessed by the No. 7 bus route that stops at the opposite end of Montefiore Road and is a 5 minute walk away.
