Work with us Volunteering Allotment Volunteer About the opportunity The Grace Eyre Foundation is a charity that supports adults with learning disabilities to realise their goals, dreams and wishes. We have a lively and innovative day service (Active Lives), a home placement scheme (Shared Lives), and a bank of relief staff to enable service users to achieve individual aspirations (Choices). This volunteering opportunity is with the Active Lives team and will support service users during activities at the Weald Allotment in Hove. We need someone with passion to support the allotment sessions with staff and service users. The volunteer would be welcome to work the land throughout the year including during the winter when sessions are less frequent. Sessions begin in March/April time each year. Allotment Volunteers: Support and encourage people to engage in activities such as planting seeds, looking after plants and harvesting and preparing food in our new pizza oven (for example). Engage people in and support them to focus their attention on sessions. Encourage service users to take part in group discussions. Assist staff with preparing the allotment for sessions. Help with evaluation. Support people with their mobility. Be there to listen and interact with people. Dig, hoe, weed, water, prepare soil, build planters, and recycle old pallets. Teach others about food growing, passing on skills you have learned, and creating a welcoming atmosphere. Skills and qualifications The volunteer must have a positive attitude and be confident in supporting staff and service users in the sessions. Other skills/qualifications that would be useful include: Knowledge of and experience in tending an allotment or garden and, preferably, in sharing that knowledge and experience with others.
