Rob is a Senior Project Worker in Grace Eyre’s Active Lives scheme – our vibrant day service offering a range of activities to over 150 service users, the people who use Grace Eyre’s services. This is just one example of the wide range of roles at Grace Eyre where we employ over 250 staff.
Tell me about your role and your typical day
My job is about empowering people as human beings, focusing on their ability, rather than their disability.
I’m based in our Duty Office, taking calls, dealing with enquiries, administering medication (if required) and providing support as and when. I also assist in our café – a very busy and friendly environment at the heart of our charity. My role is a very interactive one!
It’s socially rich place and one of the longest consistently running local support networks. It’s fantastic that our service users are so empowered. I feel supported by staff and services users alike – it’s a great experience. We have a very dynamic community and there is a lot of engagement.
What did you do before this?
I’ve been working in this field since I was 16 years old. My Mum was a care home manager. I’ve worked with children with learning disabilities and a day service for adults with challenging behaviour. It’s all about enabling communication.
What qualities do you need for this job?
You need to be proactive, have a sense of the bigger picture, time and enthusiasm to invest in relationships and a sense of humour!
It’s worth getting up in the morning for. I go to work with a smile on my face. All the staff here have a genuine concern for the welfare of our service users and a desire to do their best for the people they support.
