Students from our ‘Employability and Skills’ and ‘Money and Numbers’ courses recently marked their brilliant achievements, alongside friends and family, with a celebration event at Exeter Street Hall.

The students were awarded certificates by Alison Moss from the Department for Work and Pensions and were congratulated by Eva Eriksson, Grace Eyre’s Chief Executive. They enjoyed bubbly and nibbles and listened to an inspirational speech from Nathaniel Lawford, Grace Eyre’s Inclusion and Projects Director. Nathaniel began his career through our original Employment Project.

Nathaniel said:

“The Employment Project gave me new life. I am proud to have started my new life and my new career through the project. New doorways to finding confidence, belonging and opportunity in our lives keep being added to by this remarkable employment team.”

The students attended courses at various venues in the city, including our Montefiore Road site, Exeter Street Hall and our central Brighton base, The Reach. The students gained skills and increased confidence to feel more ready for work and other life experiences. For example:

  • Ed completed the Employability and Skills course earlier this year and has since used his new skills volunteering for the Brighton Festival during May.
  • Sarah found a regular shift at a charity shop in Brighton where she can further build her confidence and work readiness.
  • Fiona completed the Money and Numbers course and discovered a love of maths, especially division, which she has enjoyed bringing into everyday life.

Our employability and skills courses are specifically designed to help people with a learning disability and autistic people 19+ build life skills, develop interests and increase employment opportunities.

We are planning more courses over the next year in both Brighton & Hove and in West Sussex. If you’d like to find out more or let us know if you are interested, see our Employability and Skills web page.

With thanks to:

  • Brighton and Hove City Council, the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, the Government’s Multiply programme and the Goodman Foundation for supporting the courses over the past year;
  • Waitrose for their support for the celebration event;
  • Exeter Street Hall for providing the venue for the event; and
  • Alison Moss from the Department for Work and Pensions for presenting the certificates.
