Here at Grace Eyre we always listen to what people with learning disabilities say and they tell us ‘we want to try new things: in a safe and supported way’.
This can be anything from taking a new bus route, cooking something different at home, or getting out and about and trying a new activity.
People with learning disabilities are trying new things every day – one of the many examples comes from George.
George has recently begun volunteering on Reception at our day centre in Hove. George does not use speech but is very capable of understanding what is being said to him and following instructions. He was initially supported by Lorenzo, our Supported Employment Project Worker. Lorenzo described George’s work as ‘amazing’ and that he is ‘such a quick learner’.
George has now skilfully managed to learn all of the Reception tasks in the first 8 weeks of his training and has enjoyed it so much that he is happy to carry on for a further 3 months! George now works alongside our Receptionist Bill – providing a friendly welcome and efficient service to everyone visiting the building.
We are all very grateful to George for all his hard work on Reception and can’t wait to see what he gets up to next!
