• Patrick - A Success Story

  Patrick has been coming to Downs Junior School for over 10 years. He originally came to help out with games lessons due to his many sporting successes but when he was helping out with the other lessons he managed to break down a lot of barriers. The barriers aren’t always with the children but with adults too. He shows everyone how capable and determined he is and is a brilliant role model. He has made many good friends over the years with children who have now gone to secondary school and still ask after him.

• Employment news: Keith starts work experience at Adur & Worthing Council

  On Tuesday 28^th February, Keith will be starting work experience at Adur & Worthing Council in their Bulky Household Waste Department. He’ll be helping to pick up unwanted furniture or white goods from people’s homes and then taking them back to the depot.

  This is a new partnership for Grace Eyre - if all goes well it will hopefully lead to the creation of more opportunities for other service users in the Worthing area in the future.

  • Disability Hate Incidents

  What is a disability hate incident?

  "Any incident which is perceived by the victim or any other person, to be motivated by a hostility or prejudice based on a person's disability or perceived disability."

  If someone thinks an incident is because someone is prejudiced towards them it is a Hate Incident.

  It could be physical abuse, threats or verbal abuse, sexual abuse, written abuse, graffiti or images, attacks on property or harassment.

  Disability Hate Incidents need to be reported.  It is not ok to ignore things that happen to people because of their disability.  Brighton and Hove have lots of reporting centres, and support for you to report incidents.  It is important we report things that happen, even if we don’t want to do anything about it, to make sure we can tackle it in the community.  You can report things that happen to you or things you see happen to others.

• Grace Eyre Theatre renamed as The Purple Playhouse

  We are excited to announce that we have renamed our newly refurbished theatre 'The Purple Playhouse'. We have plans to relaunch the theatre with a special production in Spring this year so watch this space!

• Visit to RSPB at Pulborough Brooks

  Pulborough Brooks is set in the sheltered Arun Valley within the South Downs National Park. The Visitor Centre and reserve is open all year and boasts a great variety of habitats. Since 2009 a group of service users have been visiting Pulborough Brooks regularly to help out. James Grantham explains a little bit about their work there, “We sweep the lunch area outside the visitors centre. We put the leaves into bags and take them to the compost heap with wheelbarrows. We also take the moss out of the cracks in the pavement. When we eat our lunch we can see the cows and wild deer. We also watch the birds on the feeder and can hear them singing.” As a thank you for their hard work the group were recently given a private tour of the reserve. We appreciate the support from the RSPB.

   

   

• Christmas Carol Concert

  On 13th December 2011 Grace Eyre was very privileged to have been given a concert of carols and Christmas songs by the Brighton Gay Men’s Chorus.

  This was the first concert held in the recently refurbished Grace Eyre Theatre, which really enhanced the evening with its new lighting and sound system.

  The choir really encouraged a lot of audience participation and supported some service users to sing solos and join in with some of the choir’s own songs. 

  A really great night was had by all ,and everyone  who attended wanted to pass on a vote of thanks for all the time given by the choir to make the evening so special.
