Our Shared Lives carers provide services to people with learning disabilities in the carer's home.
The scheme aims to match the personality, lifestyle, skills and knowledge of the Carer to meet the needs and preferences of the person with the learning disability. We want to provide support to the Carer and monitor the service to make sure both parties are happy and safe.
Shared Lives provides opportunities for:
- Long term accommodation: Shared Lives Carers provide support and care to the individuals who live with them. The service user is provided with a form of tenancy and pays rent, food and utility contributions to stay with the Shared Lives Carer.
- Short term accommodation (often know as ‘Respite’): Shared Lives Carers provide support and care to individuals who come to stay with them for short periods of time. These visits are usually planned in advance with the Carer agreeing to support with specific types of activities during the stay.
- Day services: Shared Lives Carers provide care, support and daytime activities that are based from their home. A range of activities are offered by the care provider. These activities provide opportunities to enable greater independence and are chosen by the service user.
- Kinship: Shared Lives Carers provide long arm care and support to an individual/s within their own home. The Carer living in their home will support the service user living in their separate home to play an active part in the family life of the Carer. This model promotes greater independence for service users whilst maintaining the levels of support that the individual requires.
