Sports
Everyone at Grace Eyre understands the benefits of exercise as a way of keeping healthy, developing confidence and having fun. We support people to participate in a range of sporting activities and to take part in sporting events where an individual wants to compete.
Sports and other physical activities include yoga, tenpin bowling, keep fit, rambling, badminton as well as bowls, swimming and horse riding.
Bowls
The Grace Eyre bowls group is a lively fun session, which includes about 8 rounds of short mat bowls each time. There is a supportive atmosphere within the session, everyone cheering each other on. The session provides confidence building and is a chance to make friends and just have fun while learning a new skill.
Swimming
There is currently a weekly training session at the Prince Regent swimming pool in Brighton. This session is supported by a member of the Grace Eyre staff team, Heather Ellis and a member of Prince Regent staff, Shaun Challis, who coach those taking part. The group do relay training, race starts and practise stroke techniques as well as time 25m/50m lengths.
4 of the swimmers qualified for the Special Olympics held in July 2009 and the swimmers have also taken part in swimming galas and other competitions such as The Reading Open held in June 2009 where personal best were gained and medals received.
What our swimmers have said:
“I like swimming and training with Heather. It makes me feel happy and helps me get fit” – Hala
“Swimming gives you energy and makes me feel great” – Violet
Horse Riding
Each week Grace Eyre takes a group of people horse riding at Ferring Country Centre. This is a charity whose horses provide riding therapy for over 600 children and adult riders each month. Horse riding improves confidence, self esteem and fitness and is very enjoyable. Everyone who goes along gets to meet all the horses before they ride and they have the opportunity to help groom them.
Special Olympics Brighton & Hove
Many people taking part in sporting activities coordinated by Grace Eyre are also active participants in the Special Olympics Brighton & Hove Team. More details of this organisation and their activities can be found at www.sobh.org.uk and details of the teams sporting successes can be found on our News page. |
