The Travel Buddy Scheme
The Travel Buddy Scheme is about supporting people with learning disabilities to travel independently on public transport as well as walking home or to college, with the support of a voluntary Travel Buddy.
The Travel Buddy enables a Trainee to learn all the essential skills to use public transport and travel independently in a safe manner. The Scheme provides training and support to develop a range of educational, social and personal skills necessary for a person to realise their individual potential to travel safely, increase their choice and independence.
The travel Buddy Scheme has always recognised the importance of working with local organisations, such as Speak Out and the Transport Department within Brighton and Hove City Council. Recently, the Scheme started networking with the Bus Company and soon we will be part of their “The Bus & The City” publicity campaign.
Also, the Brighton and Hove City Council, in their submission to the Commission For Social Care Inspection, sited the Travel Buddy Scheme as a ‘best practice’ example of partnership working within the city.
